Series Part 4 of 8: Houston 3003.4 vs. ASME A17.1 – Pit Flood Detection
Once flood mode activates, where should the elevator go? Let’s look at how Houston 3003.4 and ASME A17.1 approach destination floors during a flood.
📍 Houston 3003.4
“Removal of the elevator from service at a designated floor level approved by the fire code official.”
⬆️ ASME A17.1
“To proceed to the next available landing above the flood elevation or, in the case where there is no available landing above the flood elevation, the highest available landing.”
🔍 Summary:
Both codes share the same core goal:Â keep the elevator car, passengers, and counterweight out of floodwater.
Houston’s approach offers more flexibility. The contractor selects a floor, and the fire code official approves it. This could also result in selecting a floor higher than what A17.1 would require, creating a slight difference in implementation.
